For almost five hundred years, items once in the possession of Swedish monarchs and their families have been kept in the Royal Armoury. From generation to generation, they have built up an ever-expanding collection of memories from the country's different dynasties, evoking well-known events in Swedish history. See, for example, the costume worn by Gustav III at that fateful masked ball in 1792, Charles XII's muddy uniform from Fredriksten in 1718, and the blood-stained shirts and elk-hide buff coat worn by Gustavus Adolphus at the Battle of Lützen in 1632.

Most of the artefacts in the Royal Armoury's rich and varied collection reflect official occasions such as state ceremonies, weddings, coronations and funerals, with magnificent ceremonial carriages, armour and weapons.

Clothes and playthings once belonging to royal children are also on display. For example, Adolf Fredrik and Lovisa Ulrika's coronation gowns in silver brocade from 1751.The little silk frock worn by the two-year old Gustav (III) when he was dubbed a knight of the Seraphim order in 1748.
